There's a particular kind of quiet that settles over the coast when the fog rolls in, and Half Moon Bay has it in spades. We left San Jose a little after eight, coffees in hand, and forty-five minutes later the world had gone soft and grey and slow.

Morning: tide pools and cinnamon rolls

We started at the bluffs while the tide was still low. If you've never gone tide pooling with a toddler, it is equal parts magic and chaos — but watching her find her first sea anemone was worth every sandy sock.

The best travel days aren't the packed ones. They're the ones where you let the place set the pace.

Afterward we wandered into town for what I will confidently call the best cinnamon roll in the Bay. Warm, not too sweet, the kind you tear apart with your hands and don't apologize for.

Afternoon: the beach walk

The whole stretch of coastline here is walkable and uncrowded on a weekday. We brought my packable travel blanket, found a sheltered spot, and did absolutely nothing for an hour. Recommended.

Where we stayed

A small inn just off Main Street — nothing fancy, but clean, walkable, and quiet. Sometimes that's the whole point.

If you go: bring layers (the fog is real), go midweek if you can, and don't over-plan. The coast rewards a slow weekend.
